BP Support of Young Enterprise Trust Business Challenge a win for young NZ entrepreneurs

Young Enterprise Trust and BP NZ have launched a new partnership to help students learn key business skills.

The BP Business Challenge is a unique three-day experiential learning programme where students develop skills, understandings and attitudes about how a successful business operates. The challenge also connects the students with their local business community.

Students taking part in the BP Business Challenge will form virtual companies, research and decide on a marketable product, write a business plan and pitch the product to a panel of local judges.

In 2013, the programme will be run 43 times involving more than 50 schools around the country. 80 Year 11 students will participate in each challenge.

“The Young Enterprise team has been running the Business Challenge in New Zealand schools for many years now, and it is one of our most popular programmes,” says Terry Shubkin, CEO of Young Enterprise Trust. “Feedback from students and teachers reinforces how much students thrive on the opportunity to create new product ideas and connect with local business people.”

BP Managing Director Matt Elliott says the new sponsorship was an exciting extension of a 20-year relationship between BP and the Young Enterprise Trust.

“Since 1993, we have helped the Young Enterprise Trust identify and acknowledge young people who show innovation, initiative and passion for developing new ideas, products and services. We’re endlessly amazed by the talents of some of these young people, and we have sold some of their products through our retail outlets.

“The launch of the BP Business Challenge is a fantastic extension of that 20-year relationship, helping to inspire and engage Year 11 students about business, and providing connections with local businesses and community leaders. These are the young people who will be tomorrow’s business leaders.”

Nelson entrepreneurs light the way for export growth

Nelson based Living Light Candles has teamed up with retailer Riva, Living Light’s top-selling candle retailer, with the goal of expanding the market share of their all-natural plant, beeswax and soy-based perfumed candle ranges into all of New Zealand and Australasia starting with a flagship retail store in Auckland’s Takapuna, and a brand-new online shopping website in addition to its existing retail portfolio in the Nelson region.

Living Light Candles was first founded by Cynthia Baur in a shed on her Takaka property in 1997 and the company currently exports candles to Japan, Singapore, Germany and Australia with shipments to Holland to begin soon.

The hand made Living Light candles are already sold in prestigious department store Barneys but Baur says along with a local retail push she is keen to grow into more international markets.

“Right now we produce around 400,000 candles annually but we’d like to grow this figure to 500,000 in the next twelve months and raise our exports from 15% to 40%.”

Baur and business partner, Otago entrepreneur Bob Perriam - who bought half of the Takaka-based business earlier this year, says the expansion plans are on track and they are looking forward to the results of the first quarter.

Baur says the company will remain a Golden Bay business and continue to offer employment to the rural community through the ancient art of candle making.

“Living Light is a Kiwi brand and focuses on producing unique designs using natural ingredients, which I think encapsulates the NZ way of doing business and the clean, green image of our country, says Riva founder, Louise Barnes.

“Our new Living Light flagship store in Takapuna will be a chance for customers to browse through the entire range, do a sniff test and walk away with some wonderful products for themselves or their loved ones and at the same time, support and bring home a local brand.”

Manurewa students take out national business title

Caring & Co win Young Enterprise Awards

On Tuesday night NZ Entrepreneur had the pleasure of attending the 2012 Young Enterprise Scheme national awards held at Te Papa in Wellington.

A group of students from Manurewa High School were announced as Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year 2012.

Caring & Co from Manurewa High School beat 19 other teams from around the country to take out the coveted title. Each team had just five minutes to pitch their business to a panel of business experts, including Trilogy co-founder Sarah Gibbs and Mark Vivian from angel investor Movac.

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is a one-year programme that gives secondary students the chance to set up and run a small business. The programme is run throughout New Zealand by the Young Enterprise Trust, with just over 3000 students taking part this year.

Each student team has had to form a company, research and write a business plan and bring their product or service to market.
